GRASS VALLEY, CA - A California Highway Patrol officer was injured Tuesday morning when he struck a deer while riding his motorcycle on McCourtney Road.
Officer Bryce Hertan, 42, of the Grass Valley area, was traveling southbound on his CHP motorcycle at approximately 4:45 a.m. when a deer entered the roadway. Hertan’s motorcycle struck and killed the deer, and then went down, ejecting him from the bike.
Officer Hertan was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with cuts and bruises and a pain in his left shoulder. He was treated and released.
I just want to say that it’s that time of year when you’re going to be seeing a lot of different animals in the roadway, especially while riding in the morning hours. So far this year, I have encountered snakes, rabbits, and even burros riding through Red Rock Canyon in a blind turn. You have to be very aware and vigilant out there, guys.
